Infrastructure Development and Communications Minister and PBB vice president Dato Sri Michael Manyin said if the proposal to create the new constituency (proposed to be called Triboh) was approved, Serian would have three assemblymen.
This would mean that the people would benefit as more assemblymen meant more minor rural project (MRP) grants, added the Tebedu assemblyman.
“The Serian parliamentary constituency will be added with a new seat, which means that we will have Kedup, Tebedu and Triboh come next state election.
“In this regards, we would have three elected representatives after the election, which should be called by June 2016 the latest,” Manyin said when officiating at the closing of the Serian District Council dialogue with community leaders here yesterday.
Kedup assemblyman Martin Ben, Local Government and Community Development Ministry permanent secretary Datu Dr Penguang Manggil, Serian District officer Sinde Muling and political secretary to chief minister John David Nyauh were also present.
The event, held at Serian Community Hall, was organised in conjunction with the council’s silver jubilee celebration.
Triboh is one of the 11 new state constituencies proposed by the EC in its delineation exercise announced on Jan 5. The others are Batu Kitang, Stakan, Serembu, Gedong, Kabong, Tellian, Selirik, Murum, Samalaju and Long Lama.
Manyin also believed that the creation of another constituency in Serian was timely in view of the proposal to upgrade the district to a division.
However, full support from the people was much needed to ensure that the Barisan Nasional (BN) government could continue its development agenda, he stressed.
“Both the state and federal governments are fully aware of the fact that Serian has always been known as a BN stronghold. Whether we continue to progress, it depends on your vote. With your support, we will strive to bring more development,” he said.
